his year’s Dragon Boat Festival came and I celebrated it in Nicaragua, founding nowhere having a habit of holding familiar dragon-boat racing and hanging bulrushes and Ay Tsao. However, the tradition of making and eating Zongzi is completely reserved.

And since there were few of them, some rookies were gathered together to learn the process of making Zongzi. Everything proceeded well since experts had patience with rookies who also pretty desired to gain some knowledge about the practice, which included taking leaves, soft folding, slight rolling, scooping out rice, making small gaps, filling jujube, supplementing rice, squeezing, sealing with leaves and tying up. After all these steps were finished, the last remained step was to check if any crack existed (if a crack exists, then another leaf would need to be added to cover the crack against the leaking out of glutinous rice, which worsens the flavor of Zongzi). Of course, this skilled operation belonged to experts. And, for the rookies, the difficulty of making Zongzi mainly lied in the latter tying up link instead of the former easy procedures for which they could simply mimic them almost perfectly. But someone would argue that tying up Zongzi was really a simple task, wsn’t it. But in fact, that was not the case. In order to guarantee the delicious flavor and beautiful appearance of Zongzi, it was wrong to tie up too tight or too loose. Tying up too tight leaded to the break of the reed leaves while too loose resulted in unpalatable flavor because of water easily soaking into. Similarly, tying up with too much or too little threads was not practical, too, which respectively caused ugly appearance and shed of leaves…… In a word, perception was the key of making it. Luckily, under the active cooperation among Yongxin family members, two pots of Zongzi with different fillings were prepared within three hours. After three-hour practice, all the rookies picked up the skill and I believed that if they try again, they would categorically do a better job.

Every Chinese has a complex towards Dragon Boat Festival. In Nicaragua, our company was not able to offer too much, but the simple Zongzi can bring us a lot warmth and pleasures. Enjoying the fruits of our own labor, we not only understood the importance of team cooperation, but also felt the mutual concerning among company members.
